Bolasepak: UiTM Outplay POLIKU In IPT Opening Match

KUCHING: Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Samarahan beat Politeknik Kuching (POLIKU) 3-1 in the first match of the Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Football League held at the Sarawak Stadium, here, yesterday.

UiTM found the opener in the 26th minute when POLIKU’s defence opened up for Mohd Shafiq who was unmarked at the edge of the box to chip the ball over the goalkeeper.

Undaunted, POLIKU pressed on their attacks but somehow luck was not on their side as they came close on several occasions with the ball hitting the bar for an unfruitful corner.
Their attacks paid off seconds from the breather when POLIKU’s Said Idrus volleyed the ball from a cross for the equaliser.

After the breather, the match resumed with both sides trying their best to find the winner and overcome their worst enemy - fatigue.
It was only in the 78th minute that the handful of UiTM supporters rose to their feet in celebration when Alexander gave them the lead again.

Soon the fate was sealed when an own goal from Zulfadli’s POLIKU widened the scoreline to 3-1 till the final whistle which gave Shafiq Abdullah, UiTM’s head coach a smile as his team managed to record three points. (For record, both Zulfadli and Shafiq Abdullah hailed from Lawas. While Shafiq @Padan Kapong came from Long Sebangang, Zulfadli Awang Marajeh is from Kampung Punang Lawas)

“Although we played quite poorly in the first half, I am happy that we manage to pull through in the second half,” said Shafiq after the team who will travel to play against UPM Bintulu next week.

The league, sanctioned by the Football Association of Malaysia, comprises six teams from higher learning institutions in Sarawak competing on a home-and-away basis, similar to the Malaysian league format every weekend. Teams taking part in the league are UiTM, UNIMAS, Swinburne, UPM, Politeknik Kuching and Community College.

According to the organisers, the top two teams will have a chance to represent Sarawak in a sports carnival in Kuala Lumpur where all the winners from each state will be divided into divisions for the smooth flow of the competition.

It is also allowed that each team may rope in foreign players (five maximum) on a condition that they obtained an International Transfer Certificate (ITC) from the football governing body from their respective countries.
