KUCHING: RM146,000 was collected from the Waqaf An-Nur Charity Golf Championship held at the Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) yesterday. Organised by Kuching Specialist Hospital, Dewan Perdagangan Islam Malaysia, Sarawak branch and Persatuan Golf Amatur Bumiputera Sarawak, the charitable event was participated by 112 golfers from Sarawak and also from Peninsular Malaysia.

The Head of State, Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin performed the symbolic tee off at 7.45am to launch the charity golf.

Kulim (M) Berhad, which pledged to donate a total of RM750,000 throughout all the seven legs of this event, handed their donation of RM100,000 yesterday to the organisers to make them to be one of the main sponsors of the event.

"This is the second time that the golfing event is being organised here," said Ahamad Mohamad, managing director of Kulim (M) Berhad after the prize-giving lunch who is confident that Waqaf An-Nur Corporation Berhad will surpass the one million ringgit mark in their charity drive.
He added that Sarawak has two clinics, one in Satok and another in Samariang, where 13,000 patients have been treated so far regardless of their age, gender and religion at a mere price of RM5 for consultation and medicine.

Currently, with two dialysis machines at the Satok clinic, the charges are only at RM90 per-session, a fraction of the costs compared to other hospitals.

Ahamad hoped that more dialysis machines will be available in the near future hoping that the funds collected will be added by other "rich" individuals to make it possible for the clinic to buy the RM42,000 machines to treat kidney patients.

Despite the cheap service, all the 13 clinics nationwide and one hospital are manned by doctors from KPJ Healthcare to ensure the quality of their services and gain the confidence of their patients.

Meanwhile, Lokman Mustaffa a nine-handicapper carded a total of 39 points at the Matang/ Santubong greens to win the event which was played based on a system 36 Stableford.
In second place with 38 points was Lyzmie Ramli followed by Bajuri Jaujie who also similar points but playing with a handicap of 11.

The second leg of the event will be held at the Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, Shah Alam on April 25, then Port Dickson Golf and Country Club (May 25), Bukit Banang Golf and Country Club, Batu Pahat (July 31), Nam Heng Country Club, Ladang Basir Ismail, Ulu Tiram (October 2 to 3), Royal Ipoh Golf Club (October 30) and the last leg will be held at the Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort, Pasir Gudang on December 19.
