LAWAS: The government has approved a mixed development plan for Kampung Punang Jaya residential area, which would include building shophouses and light food processing centres.

Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said this project would transform the physical, social and economic landscapes of the scenic Punang coast.

“This is part of the bigger picture for Punang. There would be economic diversifications from the traditional fishing livelihood to food processing, tourism and cottage industries,” he said at a PBB Hari Raya gathering at the beach front of Punang on Saturday.

He said the Land Consolidation and Development Authority (LCDA) had been instructed to plan the mixed development in the area.

To realise this project, Awang Tenagh urged the local community to rally behind the government.

He added that he had also lobbied the federal government for money to put more concrete reef structures in Kampung Punang to protect its fishery resources.

On the proposed Kampung Punang new mosque, he gave the organising committee three days to finalise their plan for the iconic landmark. The proposal is to build the mosque using a floating concept, befitting the area’s identity and location.

Earlier, Awang Tengah opened the Kemas building in the village.

Also present at the function were his wife Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong, Lawas District Officer Hussaini Hakim, PBB executive secretary Awang Bujang Antek and PBB Bukit Sari deputy chairman Awangku JInal Abidin Pengiran Jawa.
